Trucker - The Backbone of Our Economy
The service provided by semi truck drivers forms the backbone of the North American economy. They deliver the food we eat. At least once per week food is delivered to the super market you shop at. All the appliances we enjoy are transported by them. The Fuel in your vehicle, is delivered to the gas stations by them. The food, beverages, and fuel for commercial aviation is transported by truck. Some product components are transported more than once through out their manufacturing development. In short all retail and industrial companies depend on the trucking industry for their survival. Truckers spend as much time driving on the highways as possible. Most are paid so much per kilometer, or mile they drive. For the most part they strive to arrive at their drop point destination on time. They have a set amount of time to reach the destination. Severe weather conditions, leading to road closures can occur. Serious traffic accidents, can close a highway for hours. When this occurs alternate routes are taken to meet the scheduled delivery time. There is a daily limit of the hours a truck driver can work. Then he must sleep and relax for a minimum of 8 hours. Truckers are required to keep log books of their activities. Government authorities regularly inspect the vehicles and the log books, to ensure that the truckers are operating in a legally safe manner. I witnessed the truckers lives while they were having their work break at the Husky Travel Center at Golden, British Columbia, Canada. During their off time they usually serviced the trucks first. Trucks were fueled up with diesel. Water was obtained for the radiator. Air was pumped to firm up soft tires. Windshields and mirrors were cleaned. Going inside to the washrooms came next. Toilet activities, shaving, washing, and showers followed. Dirty cloths were washed in the Travel Center laundry. Food was bought, either from the restaurant or the convenience store. Pay phones were used to call loved ones, or the boss. If the weather was nice, drivers sometimes sat outside chatting. And yes, sleep came at last,in the sleeper bunk of their semi cab. This was the life of the trucker, at the Husky Truck Travel Center. |
