Thumb Injury
There was not even a hint in the air, that the nights' events, were going to be seared into my memory for the rest of my life. It was an ordinary work night, at the store. Customers came and went. Some were people, buying dinner after their days work. There were young people getting snacks for their night of partying. People came in from the bar across the street. When the bar closed many of those customers sauntered in. Some were obviously drunk. Others were just feeling no pain. The store buzzed with activity. There was merry making, jostling, and people just looking to start a fight. Most were just hungry, for a snack. After the bar crowd had their fun, they meandered out of the store. The atmosphere gradually quietened down. It was time to start the nights' store chores. I set out to stock the drink and dairy cooler. The cooler was an long employee walk in fridge, with glass doors in front. Dairy products were at the front as you walked in. Next was fruit juice, tea, flavored water, and then soft drinks in their various sizes. Filling the milk could be a heavy task. The milk sat in plastic crates. The crates were frequently mixed up, by date, product type and size. So they had to be lifted to find what you were looking to stock with. Moving to the fruit juice, I noticed that the time was about 4:30 in the morning. There were small bottles of juice on the upper most shelves. The shelves had a thick wire rack appearance. To fill the juice, the products needed were reached from shelves directly behind, the display shelves. The products were placed by hand on the wire display racks. As it was early in the morning, I was getting a little sleepy. Getting sleepy tends to make me a little clumsy, and lazy too. While moving one of the small bottles of orange juice toward the wire rack shelf, the bottle slipped out of my hand. Perhaps the glass bottle had water droplets, of condensation on its exterior. As the bottle slipped out of my hand, I thoughtlessly tried to catch it.I useds the same hand it had fallen out of. As my thumb and fingers grasped the bottle a nasty thing happened. The bottle shattered against the metal shelf. Instantly I felt the searing bite of a shard of glass, as it sliced into the ball of my left thumb. A small glass was embedded in my thumb. It was rapidly becoming red, with my blood. Instinctively I pulled the piece of glass out. Then clamped my good hand around the cut thumb, which was pouring blood. Some where I found a wad of paper towel and clamped that around my bleeding thumb. Fortunately there was a taxi cab at the store. The driver was shopping inside the store. Seeing the state I was in, he offered to drive me to the local hospital. It was a short 5 minute drive to the hospital. Since it was about 5 in the morning, a doctor had to be called in from his home. I needed stitches. It took about half an hour for the doctor to arrive. Seeing that I looked a bit white and shaky, the nurse let me lay down on an examining table. When the doctor arrived, he examined my cut thumb. He said I would need stitches to close the cut. The thumb was first frozen with an injection. Then about 10 stitches were inserted into he ball pad of my thumb. Even through the freezing, I could feel the needle going through the flesh of the thumb. When he had finished sewing , I rested for a while. I was released later that morning to go home and rest. When the freezing in the thumb wore off, it was not fun. My thumb screamed violent pain messages to the brain for 24 hours. Take my sound advise. If you ever drop a glass bottle, let it fall. It is alright if it breaks on the floor. Accidents happen.
