The New Kicking Horse Canyon Bridge Opening
A brand new bridge, together with a highway diversion, has been constructed in the kicking Horse Canyon. It is located about 10 miles east of Golden, British Columbia, Canada.
It cost over 129 million dollars from 2 governmental levels.
Some of the funds for the construction came from the Federal Government of Canada. The Provincial Government of British Columbia contributed the balance of funds for the Kicking Horse, Trans Canada Highway upgrade project. That stretch of highway through the canyon had some of the most dangerous conditions, on the Trans Canada Highway.
The problem with the old route was that it was very narrow and winding. There were curves on the highway at the entrance to both ends of the bridge. This made travel dangerous in slippery or wet, winter conditions.
Over the years there have been many accidents on the highway there. A few years ago, there was a serious fatal accident in the canyon.
It put pressure on both levels of government to move ahead
with this project.
A semi truck carrying a load of steel lost its’ load. There just happened to be a bus full of students near the truck at the time.
The steel punctured, and entered the passenger area of the bus. Some people were fatally injured.
The new route and bridge construction eliminates these adverse conditions. The curves on the new route are very gradual. The steepness of the grade, climbing the hill has been greatly reduced. This extra level of safety has facilitated a much higher speed limit on the highway.
The whole travel experience there has been greatly improved.
Traveling on that section of the Trans Canada Highway has become a much more pleasant experience.
