The Humble Unobtrusive Screw

The screw is almost an invisible entity, unless you need one. It blends in seamlessly, all around us, in our every day life.

Screws are either used in metal, wood, or other substances.
They have many applications. The primary function of a
screw is for fastening or joining, parts or elements, of a device, machine, or structure together.

The screw itself is a machine. The screw is basically a pointed cylinder, with a protruding ridge, winding around it.
Another way of seeing this is imagining a winding road climbing up and around a circular mountain.
The top of the screw is designed to connect with either a screw driver or a wrench.

The helix quality of the screw’s thread gives it the mechanical advantage of an inclined plane.
This is the reason a screw holds so tightly and is a much stronger fastener than a nail.

The first screw is reportedly to have been fashioned by a
clock smith from Germany in 1513.
It was only in the late 1700s that a mass production method
of fashioning a precision screw became possible.
Henry Maudslay should be a revered and famous man.
He should be celebrated as the founder, of our modern technological society.
