The Car May be Green but It is Built like a Lemon
Don’t buy the 1996 Dodge Stratus. It has serious mechanical and design quirks. What follows is a short list of the bad points this car has. Several features of this car were not designed to be friendly to the owner or the mechanic. There is no drain valve on the bottom of the radiator. This means that one of the hoses connecting to the radiator would need to be removed to drain the coolant. There is no battery in the engine compartment of the car. The Dodge Stratus, houses the battery in a compartment ahead of the drive wheels. To change the battery requires that the left front wheel be removed. A plastic wheel well covering needs to be taken off to gain access to the battery compartment. The Dodge Stratus contains no voltage regulator. A computer module controls the charging of the battery. In fact it controls the flow of electricity throughout the entire vehicle. In my experience this power control module, frequently behaves very erratically. Changes in outside air temperature cause the module to become unstable. This is indicated when the battery charge trouble light comes on. It warns of a problem with the cars’ charging system. The gauges on the dash flicker. Their needles jump about. I was told by a mechanic a new computer module would cost $500.00. Turning off the ignition, and restarting the car sometimes resets what ever was going wrong with the module. Last but not least there is a security lock switch inside the trunk area. It is located just below the lip of the trunk, where the lid of the trunk locks. From time to time this switch vibrates into the locked position. When this occurs the trunk can not be opened normally. The switch must be reset by hand. To do this one folds down the back seat. It is necessary to reach your arm all the way into the far end of the trunk. You feel for the lock lever to push it with your fingers. This is not a pleasant thing to do. Now,I make it a point to move the safety lock switch firmly to the unlock position, each time the trunk is opened. So take sound advice from an experienced owner. Give the Dodge Stratus a miss. Don’t drive it home off the sales lot.
