Surge Protector Your Plug In Guard

The plug in or power strip your digital equipment receives the power from, needs to be fitted with a voltage surge protection device.
It is called a surge protector. Some types of surge protectors plug directly into the power outlet.
Others are built into the power bar. Power bar surge
protection is usually minimal. The level of protection is too slow, and not adequate to fully protect delicate digital media appliances.
Electrical outlet plug in surge protectors, offer the highest level of voltage surge protection.
Check the warranty and specifications of the device
at the time of purchase, to be sure it is correct for your application.

Voltage or power surges can occur from thunder and lightning storms.
Severe weather featuring ice and wind assaults on the power grid system, can also cause sudden power fluctuations. These events can cause sudden increases in the voltage of the electricity, that comes to your home power outlets. Voltage is to electricity, as water pressure is to water running in a pipe. The more force or energy applied, more active is the effect produced.
Voltage surges can come when the power comes back on after
a power outage. Sometimes the electricity does not come on again, in a smooth constant stream. The power may flicker on and off a few times.
This is often when voltage surges occur.

Plug in surge protector prices start at about $15.00 to $20.00. They can come packaged with other features in a device such as a battery back up system.

The surge protector works by making the excess voltage above your regular 110 volt service, detour into the ground wire of the outlet. Thus the high voltage, becomes harmless to your appliance.

Surge protection equipment can wear out and become ineffective. I found this to be true. I have had a telephone and a computer damaged by electrical surges. To be safe surge protection equipment should be replaced yearly.
