Pet Gizmo
Snoopy was a chunky Rotweiller. Her favourite things to do were, eat, go for walks, sniff out interesting holes in the ground, and hassle squirrels. Often we would walk up a nearby mountain side. One day she stumbled. She hurt a joint on her left front leg. It caused her enough discomfort that she could not walk about. She needed the injured joint supported, so it could heal. With the leg supported above and below the injured joint, she should be able to walk about. I came up with the idea of using a hot water pipe insulation sheath. This type of insulation is quite firm while at the same time, a little spongy. It should be comfortable to wear while providing support. I cut a seven inch length of the spongy tube in half. A five inch piece of the pipe insulation was also fashioned in the same way. The longer halved pipe would go on the back side of her leg. The shorter piece on the front of the leg so as to give the front part of the joint a tiny bit of flexibility. Surprisingly the dog seemed to understand that I was putting the two halves of the tube on her leg to help her. She did not object by struggling or fussing. I wrapped some really powerful sticky packing box tape, around the two halves of the foam pipe, securing it to the dog leg. Care was taken not to tighten this spongy splint too tightly to her leg. The splint was just tight enough to stay on the leg and give the joint support. The idea worked. she was able to walk around, much easier than before it was attached to her leg. I had her wear the splint for several days. After the leg joint had healed she was able to walk about normally again.
