How To Save Money By Doing Oil Changes Yourself

Doing an oil change on your family car, can save you big money. As you may have learned, the repair shop labor rates are very high. The parts they install are often marked up substantially, from what the supplier charge. Doing this work your self will be a much better deal.

You can find them at a parts store like Napa, or
most large hardware stores. Ask for an oil filter, and filter wrench.
Tell the clerk the year and model of your car. It also helps to know the size of your cars' engine. Buy the motor oil, that your owners manual recommends for your vehicle.
Purchase a grease gun loaded with grease.

The things you will need to change the oil include:
a vehicle jack, and a large metal dish to catch the oil as it drains out.
Purchase a box wrench which will fit the bolt at the bottom of the cars’ oil pan. The size is usually around 1/2 inch.
The oil filter wrench, rags, newspapers, and empty containers completes this list.

First, block the back tires of the vehicle, so it can’t move when jacked up. Do this with blocks of wood or large rocks. Place the blocks of wood in front and behind each back tire. Find a strong metal support beam under front of the car. Place the jack contact point, under this beam. Jack up the car.

With the grease gun in hand, locate the grease nipples, in the tire steering linkage area. Attach the hose, and pump grease into each nipple.

Spread news paper on the ground, below the oil filter, and oil pan. Slide the large metal catch dish close to the vehicles oil pan.
Turn the bolt on the oil pan, using the box end wrench, counter clock wise to loosen it. Place the catch pan under the bolt before you remove it.
After removing the bolt from the oil pan, let the oil drain out of the car completely. Then replace the bolt in the oil pan and tighten it.
Move the catch pan to sit under the oil filter. Using the filter wrench, turn the old oil filter, counter clock wise. This will loosen it.
When removing the oil filter, tip the hole up so the oil will not run out of it. Screw on the new oil filter. Tighten it with the filter wrench. Don’t over tighten the filter. Just make it snug.

Remove the oil catch pan, from under the car.
Fill the oil in the catch pan into empty plastic containers.
Remove the news paper from under the vehicle.
Release the jack, to gently let the car down to the ground.
Open the hood of the vehicle. Locate the oil filler cap.
Remove the cap. Check the amount of oil your car requires,
from the owners manual. Add clean fresh oil into the filler hole.
Replace the oil filler cap. Start the vehicle.
Check under the vehicle to see if any oil is leaking.
The oil pressure trouble light should, disappear, or go out. This indicates that the oil pressure has returned to
normal. Turn off the car. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then check the oil level dip stick to be sure the car has adequate oil, in the oil pan. The oil level on the dip stick should be below maximum, but not below add. Do not fill the oil above the maximum point on the dip stick.

You may get some dirty hands and grimy clothes, doing this job, but it is worthwhile.
