How to Exchanged Two Light Fixtures
These are the steps to exchange two light fixtures from different rooms. Turn on the first light fixture you wish to exchange. When it is on, go to your breaker box . Locate and turn off the power going to that light. Since the light has turned off it is safe to touch the wires. Get a stool or chair to stand on. Remove the screws that attach the light fixture to the ceiling. Allow the fixture to hang loose, suspended by the wires. Take careful note of the wire colors at the point where they join to the base of the light fixture. Write it down if you need to. This will be needed later when the wires are reconnected. In my case it was black wire to gold colored connection. The White wire to silver connection. Disconnect the wires coming out of the ceiling that attach to the bottom of the light fixture. Go to the other light fixture you wish to swap with the one you just removed, and repeat the above procedure. Again be sure to turn off the electricity at the breaker box before touching the light fixture. Now that you have removed both light fixtures swap them to the new rooms. Install the fixtures by first checking the wire color codes you noted, specific to each light fixture. Connect the correct color wires to the base of the first light fixture. Attach protective plastic twist coverings to the ends of the wires, if you joined wires. This is not necessary if the wires from the ceiling, are screwed directly into the base of the light fixture. Make sure that the wire connections are tight. Line up the holes at the bottom of the light fixture with the attachment screws coming out of the ceiling. Push the screws through the base holes. Tighten the screws holding the light fixture to the ceiling, until the base almost touches the ceiling. Then twist the light fixture base. This moves the base so the screws hold more securely. Finish tightening the fixture screws. Screw the light bulbs into the light fixture. Turn on the breaker for the light fixture in the breaker box. The light should come on. Repeat the above steps for the other light fixture. Both light fixtures should work when the electricity is turned on from the breaker box. |
