How Not to have Fun at 7-Eleven

Teenagers know how to have loads of fun at 7-Eleven.
Almost any time you go into a store within walking
distance from a school you will see them socializing.
I know this because I worked for Southland Canada, otherwise known as 7-11, for over five years.
Most people would think that I was just a sales clerk.
Employees at 7-Eleven do almost all the jobs in the store.
Besides being clerks they do many other tasks.
Employees do most of the janitorial work in the store.
This includes sweeping and mopping the floor in the store. The washrooms are cleaned by staff. Windows, shelves,
display cases, and glass doors are cleaned by employees.
Some stores have gasoline pumps outside.
They are cleaned by staff members.
In the days when the law enforced drink bottle paid returns, employees stored and sorted the various sizes of bottles.
The drink and dairy coolers are stocked by staff members.
Store shelves are regularly cleaned and stocked.
Everyone takes turns doing these tasks.
Once a week ordering is done for the entire store.
The ordering is usually divided up among the staff.
Each member has their own store section to order for.
Some staff members are trained to make subs, and sandwiches.
They often work at night.
A few lucky employees are trained to cook deep fried chicken, French fries, and kabobs.
This includes preparing the meat so it is ready to be fried.
The cooks clean and service the deep frying machine.
In addition to all the above work staff take time to be sales clerks too.
Raises are offered every six months. In return for more money additional work is expected from the employee. In my experience most staff members usually do not last for over five years. The employee turnover rate is very high.
New people are constantly coming to work at the store, as other staff members leave to begin a better job.
Staff frequently burn out. When I was working there, staff were required to work any shift posted. That included 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.,and 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Shift work is hard on the body. One always feels a bit tired. This contributes to employee burnout. That’s why I left their employ.
